Count files as well as terabytes
Germany's 10 Gbps Storage selection contains twelve capacities from 100 to 650 TB, with HDD space for data and a 500 GB system SSD. For a collection of small documents, the first sample should include file count, the size distribution and directory organisation. One hundred terabytes made up of many short documents presents a different selection problem from the same volume spread across a few large datasets.
GNU df offers an inode usage view. Include that measurement in the budget for the filesystem intended to hold the collection, alongside available space. Prepare a sample with the planned structure, including directories and auxiliary results. This helps select capacity with both the content volume and the number of entries in view. Those entries are part of the workload when the application lists, locates and serves documents from the collection.
Use a sample that reflects document work
Germany's Storage 10 Gbps offers retain two Xeon E5-2680 v3 processors and 128 GB of RAM across all twelve capacities. The comparison can focus on how much material is kept and how it is queried. If a service finds documents by project, design a sample covering recent projects, rarely visited ones and searches returning several results. This avoids evaluating only the folder most familiar to the team.
Linux I/O counters distinguish completed operations from transferred sectors. Observe them over an interval alongside the sample, also recording how many documents the application resolves. A complete collection scan and an individual lookup should be recorded as different tasks. Choose HDD capacity around the intended collection while keeping its access pattern explicit. The selected machine will need to support that pattern as users move between projects and request their documents.
